When there's no key left, the work happens at the car in Riverview: a fresh key, cut to your car's code and programmed where it's parked. If one key still works, you can drive in instead: spares, fobs, and programming happen at our walk-in counter in South Tampa, 8am to 8pm every day but Sunday.

What Happened to Your Key?

Replacing a car key can mean a few different jobs, and which one you need comes down to what's left on your key ring. Find yours below; each card links to the page with the details. If none of them fits, call (813) 832-4777 and tell us what happened.

Every Key Is Gone

No spare, nothing to copy. We drive out to the car, cut a key from the code, and program it at the car. See lost car key replacement.

One Key Left

With one good key left, a second is the easy job, made at our counter or at your car. See spare car keys made.

Fob or Smart Key Quit

Often it's the battery or a lost pairing rather than a dead fob, and we tell you which before you spend anything. See key fob replacement.

Cracked Case or Loose Flip Key

If the board and chip are fine, the fix is a flip repair or a fresh shell. See key shell and flip key repair.

Worn Key That Sticks

A copy of a worn key inherits the wear; cutting a new one from the key code avoids it. See laser-cut car keys.

Chip Key, No Buttons

Cut to your locks, then programmed to the immobilizer so the engine will run. See transponder key programming.

On-Site in Riverview

No Key Left? We Come to the Car

Without a working key, the car can't come to us, so the job happens where it sits. In Riverview, that might be your own driveway in Summerfield, a street in Panther Trace, a store lot off Big Bend Road or Gibsonton Drive, or a spot along US-301 or Boyette Road, anywhere in 33569, 33578, or 33579.

Our service vans carry key cutting machines and programming tools, so the whole job, cutting and programming, happens beside the car, with no tow and no dealership appointment. Ready to book? Call for a live ETA; the quote is free: (813) 832-4777. Have the address and the car's year, make, model, and VIN handy.

Keys shut inside the car? The fix is opening it, not making a key, and our car lockout help page covers that. For home and business locks in town, see our Riverview locksmith page.

Walk-In Shop

Spares and Fobs at Our South Tampa Counter

When the car still starts, you can bring it to us. Our storefront is at 4556 S Manhattan Ave in South Tampa (33611), open to walk-ins 8am to 8pm every day but Sunday. From Riverview, I-75 north connects to the Selmon Expressway, which runs west into South Tampa.

At the counter we make spare keys, program replacement remotes and push-button smart keys, cut laser-cut blades on the high-security key machine in our shop, and fit a working fob's insides into a fresh case. Programming needs the car present, so drive it in, and give us the car's year, make, and model first, so we can check the shelf for your key.

The Locksmith Shop has been family-owned since 2009, with bonded, insured, background-checked techs. Se habla español: our techs work in English or Spanish.

Cut, Program, Test

How We Make a Key When There's Nothing to Copy

Car keys are cut to a code, and that code is how a key gets made with no original. After you show you own the car, we look the code up by VIN (on some cars, the key is cut to match the locks instead), and then the blade gets cut to that code.

Most modern keys carry more than a blade. Inside the head sits a transponder chip that the car's immobilizer reads before it lets the engine run, and many keys add a remote board for the lock and unlock buttons. Our programming equipment connects to the car to register the new chip and pair the remote or smart key.

The job ends with a test at the car: lock, unlock, and start, with the new key and any key you still have.

What gets made: the blade is cut to the key code, the transponder chip is programmed to the immobilizer, and the remote is paired to the car.
Before You Call

Have These Ready

  • Your driver's license or another photo ID.
  • Ownership paperwork: the registration, title, or insurance documents in your name.
  • The VIN. Your registration and insurance card both list it, and so do a small plate on the dashboard (visible through the windshield) and the label in the driver's door frame.
  • All the keys and fobs that belong to the car, including dead ones. Some cars forget any key that isn't present at programming time.
  • On-site jobs: the address, plus any gate code or parking details we'll need to reach the car.
  • A car in someone else's name, a business vehicle, or a rental? Call first. Rentals belong to the rental company, so start with them.
Honest Answers

Most Makes, and a Few Exceptions

We make keys for Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, Mazda, Subaru, Infiniti, Acura, Lexus, Volkswagen, BMW, and more, covering mid-2000s cars through the current model year, plus most Mercedes-Benz models from 2014 and earlier. Start from car keys by make, or open Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, or Nissan.

A few need more. On many newer GM vehicles, programming requires a factory-authorized step, and we have that access for most models (see Chevy and GMC). Newer Jeeps, Rams, Dodges, and Chryslers often add a security layer to key programming, and our equipment is set up for it. Rare imports we verify first, and some of the newest Volkswagen and Audi models have to wait for the key to be ordered, or are dealer-only.

Mercedes-Benz from 2015 on is the clearest exception: new keys come from Mercedes dealers only, and no locksmith, us included, can program them. We can still get you into a locked one, swap a cracked fob case or a weak battery, and cut the emergency blade (more on Mercedes-Benz 2015 and newer). If your car needs the dealer, you'll know on the call, before we send anyone.

Price, Timing & Hours

Price, Timing, and Hours

We don't post prices. A Riverview car key is priced on the job in front of us: the key itself (chip key, flip key, remote-head key, or a smart key for push-button start), a laser-cut or standard blade, your exact model and year, whether there's a working key to start from, and whether the key must be ordered. Call (813) 832-4777 and read us the VIN, and we'll quote it free; you'll have the price before any work begins.

With your key on hand, it's usually done in a single visit. Smart keys involve more programming than a basic chip key, and if your key needs ordering, there's a wait for it to arrive. We tell you which applies on the phone.

We work 8am to 8pm every day but Sunday. Lose a key on a Saturday night or a Sunday? Make sure the car is somewhere it can safely sit, then call us at 8 Monday morning. Should a child or a pet end up locked in a car, dial 911 before anything else.

FAQ

Riverview Car Key Questions

Is a new key possible in Riverview with no spare at all?+

Usually, yes. Without a key, the car isn't going anywhere, so we head to it, whether it's parked at home in Panther Trace or outside a store on Big Bend Road. Once you've shown you own it, we pull the key code by VIN, cut to it, then program and test the key beside the car.

Can I get a second key made while I still have one that works?+

Yes, and it's the easier job. Drive the car to 4556 S Manhattan Ave with the key you have; walk-ins are welcome 8am to 8pm every day but Sunday. If bringing the car in doesn't suit you, we can make the spare at your car in Riverview instead.

I lost the smart key to a push-to-start car. Can it be replaced at the car?+

Yes, for most makes. A push-to-start car won't start without its smart key in range, so we come to it, program a fresh smart key there, and cut the hidden backup blade if it has one. If another fob for the car turns up, keep it with you: some cars drop fobs that are missing during programming.

Where do I find my VIN?+

Three places: the registration or insurance card, low on the driver's side of the windshield (read it from outside the car), and the label in the driver's door frame. When you call, have it handy along with the model and year, and tell us whether the car starts with a turn or a push.

The flip on my key won't lock open. Can it be fixed?+

Often, yes. That's usually a tired spring, pin, or hinge, and a cracked case can be swapped while the board and chip stay the same, usually with no reprogramming. Bring it to the shop and we'll look before you spend anything.

Do you handle Mercedes-Benz keys from 2015 on?+

Not new keys. For any Mercedes-Benz from 2015 forward, new and replacement keys are a Mercedes dealer job, and no locksmith, us included, can program them. We can still unlock it if the keys are shut inside, swap a cracked fob case or a weak battery, and cut the emergency blade. For 2014 and older Mercedes-Benz, we can make keys for most models after a VIN check.

How much will my car key cost in Riverview?+

No posted prices here, because the key and the car set the number. Smart keys for push-button starts, flip and remote-head keys, and basic chip keys are different jobs, a laser-cut blade needs a high-security key machine, and starting with no working key takes more steps than adding a spare. Call (813) 832-4777, read us the VIN, and the quote is free.

Is there a military discount?+

There is. Bring it up when you phone (813) 832-4777 for a quote.
