Volkswagen Key Replacement in Tampa
The switchblade flip key that pops out of the fob is the one most Volkswagen owners know, and its blade is laser-cut, so it takes the right machine to copy. We cut and program VW keys for most Jetta, Tiguan, Atlas, Passat, and Golf models, at our South Tampa shop or where the car is parked.
Flip Key, Smart Key, and the Blade Inside
Volkswagen has relied on the flip key for a long time: press the button on the side and the blade springs out of the fob, ready to turn. The chip and the lock buttons live in the same housing. Many Tiguan, Atlas, Passat, and Jetta trims with push-button start use a smart key instead, which stays in your pocket and hides a mechanical key for the door. Either way, the blade on many Volkswagen keys is laser-cut rather than notched.
Flip Key
The blade folds into the fob and springs out when you press the button. We cut the blade, program the chip and the remote, and can repair the flip when only the mechanism has failed.
Smart Key
Push-button trims. Touch the handle to unlock and press start with the key in your pocket. We program it and cut its hidden blade. See smart key replacement.
Laser-Cut Blade
A thick blade with a groove milled down its face. We cut it on our high-security machine, from your key or from the key code. See laser-cut car keys.
Why a VW Key Needs a High-Security Machine
Look at the blade on your VW key and you won't find notches along its edges. The cut is a groove that wanders down the flat face, and an ordinary key duplicator can't reproduce it. We cut these on our own high-security key machine, either by tracing a good key or by cutting to the factory key code.
Code cutting matters on an older Jetta or GTI whose key has years of wear on it. A worn blade starts catching in the door lock or the ignition, and tracing it only passes that wear along. Cutting from the code gives you a blade shaped the way the original was on day one. If the key has a chip, it is programmed to the car once it's cut.
When the Blade Won't Spring Out
The flip mechanism is the part of a VW key that wears out first. The blade stops popping out, pops out but won't lock, or wobbles in the housing, and the plastic around the release button cracks. As long as the chip and the board inside still work, the fix is usually a repair or a new housing, not a new key. We transfer your electronics and cut the blade if it needs it.
If the fob took on water or the board is damaged, we cut and program a replacement instead, and you'll know which it is before we start. See key shell and flip key repair for more, and get a spare made while your current key still works.
The Newest Volkswagens, and Audi
Here's the honest part. Some of the newest Volkswagen and Audi models need the key ordered before it can be made, and some are dealer-only. We check your car by VIN and tell you on the phone which category it falls into before anything is scheduled, so nobody makes a wasted trip. For most VW models, the key is cut and programmed at our shop at 4556 S Manhattan Ave or where the car is parked, with no dealer appointment.
Audi is part of the Volkswagen family, and many Audi models use the same kinds of key: flip keys with laser-cut blades, and smart keys on push-button models. If you drive an Audi, call with the year, model, and VIN, and we'll tell you whether yours is a job we can do and what it involves. Near the shop? What to Have Ready for a VW Key
- The model and year, whether it has push-button start, and the 17-character VIN from the registration, the insurance card, or the windshield on the driver's side.
- A photo ID and the registration, title, or insurance paperwork showing the car is yours.
- Your current key, even if the flip is broken or the blade is worn, so we can see what we're working with.

My VW flip key won't pop out or won't stay open. Do I need a new key?+
Usually not. A tired spring, a broken pin, or a cracked housing can be repaired, or the chip and board can move into a new flip housing. You only need a new programmed key if the electronics are damaged, and we tell you which before we start.
Can you copy a Volkswagen laser-cut key?+
Yes. We copy it on our high-security machine if the original is in good shape. If it's worn, we cut the new blade to the factory key code instead, so it doesn't inherit the wear. A key with a chip is then programmed to the car.
Can you program a smart key for a push-button VW?+
For many models, yes, with the emergency blade inside cut to your door. Some of the newest Volkswagens need the key ordered or are dealer-only, so call with the VIN and we'll tell you before anything is scheduled.
Do you make Audi keys too?+
Audi is part of the Volkswagen family, and many Audis use the same kinds of key. Call with the year, model, and VIN. Some of the newest Audi models need the key ordered or are dealer-only, and we tell you that on the phone first.
How much does a VW key cost?+
We quote it rather than post prices, because a Volkswagen key job can be a flip repair, a copied laser-cut blade, a new flip key cut and programmed, or a smart key. Whether you still have a working key matters too. The quote is free and you have it before any work begins.
