Transponder Key Programming in Tampa
Chip keys cut and programmed to your car for most makes and models. Drive in to our South Tampa shop, where walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm, or call and we'll come to you.
What Transponder Key Programming Means
A transponder key, also called a chip key, has a small chip sealed inside its plastic head. When you turn the key, your car's immobilizer reads that chip and only lets the engine run if it recognizes it. That's why a plain metal copy of your key can open the door and turn in the ignition but won't start the car: the blade is right, but the chip has never been introduced to your vehicle.
Programming is that introduction. We cut the blade to fit your locks and ignition, then connect our programming equipment to the car and register the new chip with its immobilizer. The Locksmith Shop cuts and programs transponder keys for most makes and models, at our South Tampa shop or on-site across Tampa Bay, Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm.
The Chip Starts the Car. The Blade Opens the Door.
A modern key can hold three separate parts: the cut blade, the transponder chip, and on remote-head and flip keys, a remote with its own battery. The chip needs no battery; the antenna ring around your ignition powers it, which is why a car will often still start on a key whose remote has died. On many cars the remote and the chip are programmed separately, so tell us whether your key won't unlock the car, won't start it, or both.

Drive In to the Shop, or We Come to You
If you still have one working key, the simplest route is often to drive the car to our shop at 4556 S Manhattan Ave, Tampa, FL 33611. Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm. Bring the car itself, because the new key is programmed to the vehicle, not just cut to match. Call ahead at (813) 832-4777 with your year, make, and model and we'll tell you whether the key for your car is ready to go or needs to be ordered.
If the car can't come to us, we come to it. Our service vans carry key cutting machines and programming tools, so the key is cut and programmed in your driveway, at your office, or in the lot where the car is sitting. No tow, and no dealership appointment. If you live near the shop, our South Tampa locksmith page covers the neighborhoods around it. Our techs work in English or Spanish.
What to Have Ready
- Every key you still have for the car, working or not. On some cars, programming a new key erases any key that isn't present, so bring every key you want to keep using.
- Your year, make, and model, plus the VIN. The VIN is on your registration and insurance card, and on the dashboard at the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
- Proof the car is yours. A driver's license plus the vehicle registration is standard. If the registration isn't in your name, call first and we'll tell you what we need.
How Long It Takes and What Affects the Price
Most transponder jobs are handled in a single visit. Time on the car depends on the make, the model year, and whether you're adding a key while one still works or starting with no working key at all, which takes more steps. For a rare import or a very new model, the key blank may have to be ordered first. We'll tell you which situation you're in on the phone, before you drive over or we head out.
We don't post prices for car keys, because the same job varies from one car to the next. What moves the number is your year, make, and model; the type of key (a basic chip key, a remote-head or flip key, or a smart key); and whether you still have a working key. Call for a free quote, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
Dealer or Locksmith: An Honest Comparison
A dealership can program a transponder key too, and if your car is already booked in for service, that can be convenient. Pricing varies by car at both, so the fair comparison is a quote from each. Ours is free.
At the Dealer
Typically a service appointment with the car on site. If no key works, that can mean getting the car there without driving it.
With The Locksmith Shop
Walk in to the shop Mon–Sat 8am–8pm with the car, or we come to wherever it's parked. No tow, no dealership appointment, and a free quote first.
Remotes, Spares, and Lost Keys
If your key has lock and unlock buttons, or your car is push-to-start, see key fob replacement and programming for remotes, flip keys, and smart keys. Want a backup before anything goes wrong? A spare car key made while you still have a working one is usually simpler than replacing the only one later.
Already lost every key? That's covered on our car key replacement page, and if the keys are locked inside the car, see car lockout help. Fobs are part of our building work too: we install and program key fob and key card door systems, covered on our keyless entry and access control page.

Call (813) 832-4777Transponder Key Questions
How do I know if my car key has a transponder chip?+
If the key has a thick plastic head, or your car uses a remote-head key, a flip key, or a push-to-start fob, it very likely has a chip. Plain all-metal keys usually belong to older vehicles. The quickest way to be sure is to call (813) 832-4777 with your year, make, and model, and we'll tell you.
Can you program a transponder key if I have no working key?+
Usually, yes. Lost all your keys with no spare? In most cases we can still make one. With no key to drive the car, we come to it: your driveway, your office, or wherever it's parked. Call (813) 832-4777 and we'll tell you what your car needs.
Can I bring my car to your shop for key programming?+
Yes. The shop is at 4556 S Manhattan Ave in South Tampa (33611), and walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm. Bring the car, every key you have for it, your registration, and a photo ID. Calling ahead with your year, make, and model lets us confirm the right key is on hand.
Will a key copied at a hardware store start my car?+
Not if your car uses a transponder. A plain metal copy may unlock the doors and turn in the ignition, but without a chip your car recognizes, the immobilizer won't let the engine run. The chip in the new key has to be programmed to your car.
Which makes do you program transponder keys for?+
Most makes and models, including Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Subaru, Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes. For a rare import or a very new model, call first and we'll verify your car before you drive over.
How much does transponder key programming cost in Tampa?+
It depends on your year, make, and model, the type of key, and whether you still have a working key, so we don't post prices. Call (813) 832-4777 for a free quote. You'll have the price before any work begins.
