Most Lexus models from recent years use a push-button smart key that stays in your pocket. The car unlocks when you touch the handle and starts with the button. Some models were also offered with a thin card-style key that does the same job from a wallet. Older Lexus models that start with a key you turn often use a laser-cut blade with a chip in the head.

If you have a second smart key somewhere, find it before we arrive. On some cars, programming a new key clears any key that isn't present. Down to one key? A spare made now is simpler than replacing the only one later.
When the Lexus Fob Stops Working
A smart key that suddenly won't unlock the car usually has a dead battery, and most Lexus smart keys hide a mechanical key inside for exactly this moment: slide the release, pull it out, and it opens the driver's door. If a fresh battery doesn't bring the fob back, the fob itself has failed, and we replace and program a new one.

What to Have Ready for a Lexus Key
- Your Lexus's year and model, whether it has push-button start, and the VIN from your registration, insurance card, or the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
- A photo ID plus the registration, title, or insurance documents for the vehicle.

A Lexus dealer can make a key too, typically with a service appointment and the car on site. For most Lexus models, we do it without the appointment, at the shop or in your driveway. Can you replace a Lexus smart key?+
Yes, for most models. We program a new smart key to your Lexus and cut the emergency blade inside it to your door lock. If you've lost every smart key, we come to the car, whether it's in your driveway, a garage, or an office lot.
My Lexus fob died and the car won't open. What do I do?+
Most Lexus smart keys have a mechanical key hidden inside. Slide the release on the fob and pull it out, and it opens the driver's door. If the fob's battery is the problem, a fresh battery may fix it. If the fob itself has failed, we replace and program a new one.
Do you make keys for older Lexus models with a key you turn?+
