Kia Keys

Flip Key or Smart Key

Most Kias on the road use one of two keys. Many models that start with a key you turn use a flip key: the blade folds into the fob, and the chip and the lock buttons are built in. Many newer Telluride, Sorento, Sportage, K5, and Seltos trims start with a push button and a smart key that stays in your pocket, with an emergency blade inside for the door. Some base models use a plain key with a chip in the head.

Flip Key

Blade, chip, and buttons in one fob. We cut the blade and program both the chip and the remote, or repair the flip if only the case is broken.

Smart Key

For push-button Kias. The car senses the key nearby; the emergency blade inside is cut to your door. See smart key replacement.

Chip Key

A cut blade with a transponder chip. A plain copy won't start the car until the chip is programmed. See transponder key programming.

Damaged Ignition

Ignition Damaged in a Theft Attempt

Some Kia and Hyundai models that start with a key you turn were built without an engine immobilizer, and they became a common target for thieves. If someone went after yours, the ignition is often left broken: the key won't go in, won't turn, or the cylinder is loose or missing.

We repair the ignition when it can be repaired and replace it when it can't, then make keys to match, so one key still works the doors and the ignition. Bring the car to the shop if it starts, or we come to it if it doesn't. Ask us about a spare key while we're there.

Broken Flip Key

When the Flip Key Breaks

Flip keys take a beating. The blade stops locking open, the hinge snaps, or the case cracks and the buttons fall out. If the chip and the circuit board inside still work, a new key isn't always needed: we can repair the flip or move the inside into a new shell, and cut the blade if it's worn. If the electronics are damaged, we replace and program a new key instead, and tell you which it is before any work begins.

Kia is Hyundai's sister brand, and many of their flip and smart keys are the same types. Our Hyundai key page covers them in more detail.

Before You Call

What to Have Ready for a Kia Key

  • Your Kia's year and model, whether it has push-button start, and the VIN from your registration, insurance card, or the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
  • A photo ID plus the registration, title, or insurance documents for the vehicle.
  • Every key you still have, including a broken flip key, and a note on what the ignition is doing if it was damaged.
Cost & the Dealer

Cost, and Skipping the Dealer

We don't post Kia key prices, because every car is different. The type of key matters most, then whether it's a repair or a new key, your model and year, and whether you still have a working key. You get a free quote by phone and the price before any work begins.

A Kia dealer can make a key too, typically with a service appointment and the car on site. For most Kias, we do it without the appointment, at the shop or where the car is parked, usually in a single visit. Rare or very new models may need the key ordered first, and we tell you on the phone which category yours falls into. Near the shop? Our South Tampa locksmith page covers the neighborhoods around it.

We confirm the key or the repair and give you the price before any work begins.

  3. Step 3

FAQ

Kia Key Questions

Someone tried to steal my Kia and the ignition is damaged. Can you fix it?+

Yes. We repair the ignition or replace it, depending on the damage, and make keys to match so you're not carrying one key for the doors and another for the ignition. Call (813) 832-4777 with the year and model and tell us what the ignition is doing, and we'll quote it free.

My Kia flip key won't stay open, or the case broke. Do I need a whole new key?+

Often not. If the chip and the buttons still work, we can repair the flip mechanism or move the inside of the key into a new shell, and cut the blade if it needs it. If the electronics are damaged, we replace and program a new key instead.

Can you program a Kia smart key for push-button start?+

Yes, for most models. We program the new smart key to your Kia and cut the emergency blade inside it to your door lock. If you've lost every key, we come to the car.

Are Kia keys the same as Hyundai keys?+

They're close. Kia and Hyundai are sister brands, and many of their keys are the same types: flip keys on many models with a key you turn, smart keys on push-button models. See our Hyundai key page for more on those key types.

How much does Kia key replacement cost?+

Every car is different, so we don't post prices. What moves the number is the type of key (a flip key or a smart key), your model and year, whether it's a repair or a new key, and whether you still have a working key. Call for a free quote, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
