Mazda Keys

The Two Keys Most Mazdas Use

Most Mazdas on Tampa roads carry one of two keys. Many models that start with a key you turn use a flip key: press the button and the blade swings out of the fob, with the chip and the lock buttons built into the same housing. Models with push-button start use a smart key that stays in a pocket or a bag, with a small mechanical key inside for the door. Some older Mazdas use a fixed blade with a chip in the head and a separate remote.

Flip Key

The blade folds into the fob and swings out at the press of a button. When the case or hinge fails but the electronics don't, we can often repair it instead of replacing it. See flip key repair.

Smart Key

On push-button Mazdas, the car reads the key from your pocket. We program a replacement and cut its built-in mechanical key to your door lock. See smart key replacement.

Fixed-Blade Chip Key

Found on some older key-start Mazdas. The blade is cut, then the transponder in the head is programmed so the engine will start. See transponder key programming.

Flip Key Trouble

When a Mazda Flip Key Starts Falling Apart

A flip key gets opened and closed every time you drive, and on a Mazda that's a few years old it tends to show. The blade stops locking in place and folds back while you turn it, the release button sticks, or the housing splits along the seam until the buttons and the board slide out. None of that has to mean a new key. If the chip and the circuit board still work, we repair the flip mechanism or move everything into a fresh housing, and a key fixed that way normally keeps working with the car just as it did before.

Look at the blade while you're at it. Notches along its edges mean a standard cut. A wavy groove down its flat face means a laser-cut key, and we cut those on our high-security machine; a worn one gets cut fresh from the key code instead of copied. More on repairs: key shell and flip key repair.

Smart Keys

A Push-Button Mazda That Can't Find Its Key

On a push-button Mazda, a weak fob battery usually shows up gradually: you have to stand closer before the doors respond, or a key warning appears on the dash. Start with a fresh battery. If the car still won't recognize the fob, it may need to be programmed again or replaced, and we test it first so you know which before paying for a new one.

Your owner's manual also shows a backup way to start most push-button cars when the fob battery is low, usually by holding the fob close to the start button. If every smart key is lost, the car can't be driven, so we come to it and program the new key where it's parked (see lost car key replacement). A spare smart key made while one still works is the easier job.

One more for MX-5 owners: a roadster that sits in the garage between weekend drives can come back with a flat car battery, and then the remote won't open the doors at all. The mechanical key in the fob, or the blade on a flip key, still will.

Before You Call

What to Have Ready for a Mazda Key

  • Your Mazda's model and year, whether it has a start button, and the VIN, which appears on the registration, the insurance card, and the dash where it meets the windshield on the driver's side.
  • A photo ID along with the registration, title, or insurance card for the car.
  • Every key you have, including a broken flip key and any loose pieces of it.
Price & New Models

Pricing, New Models, and the Dealer

No posted prices here, because a Mazda key can be anything from a flip-key repair to a new smart key programmed from scratch. What moves the quote is the type of key, whether it's a repair or a replacement, and whether you still have one that works. The quote is free and comes before any work begins.

The newest Mazdas, including the CX-90, may need the key ordered before we can make it, and some very new models may be dealer-only for a while. We check by VIN and tell you on the phone which applies, so nobody drives out for nothing. For most Mazda models, though, the key is made at our shop on S Manhattan Ave or wherever the car is parked, with no dealer appointment. Nearby? Our South Tampa locksmith page covers the area around the shop.

Process

How It Works

  1. Step 1

    Describe the Key

Call (813) 832-4777 with the model, year, and VIN, and tell us if it's a broken flip key, a fob the car won't read, or a lost key.

  2. Step 2

    Free Quote

We tell you whether it's a repair or a new key, and what it costs, before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair or Make It

At the shop or by the car: the flip key is repaired, or a new key is cut and programmed.

FAQ

Mazda Key Questions

My Mazda flip key won't lock open. Can it be fixed?+

Usually. A flip that won't stay open is most often a worn spring or pin, and that can be repaired. A cracked housing can be swapped while the chip and circuit board stay the same. Only when the electronics themselves fail do you need a new programmed key, and we'll tell you which it is before any work begins.

Can you program a new smart key for my push-button Mazda?+

Yes, for most models. The smart key is programmed to your Mazda and its mechanical key is cut to fit the door. Lost every smart key? We come to the car, since it can't be driven without one.

My Mazda keeps warning that it can't detect the key. Do I need a new fob?+

Not necessarily. The most common cause is a weak battery in the fob, so try a fresh one first. If the warning keeps coming back, the fob may need to be programmed again or replaced, and we test it to tell you which.

Do you make keys for the CX-90 and other new Mazdas?+

Call with the VIN first. The newest models may need the key ordered, and some very new ones may be dealer-only for a while. We tell you on the phone which applies before anything is scheduled.

How much does Mazda key replacement cost?+

We don't post prices because Mazda key jobs vary: repairing a flip key, cutting and programming a new flip key, and programming a smart key are different jobs. Call for a free quote, and you'll know the price before any work starts.
