Laser-Cut Car Keys in Tampa
Laser-cut keys need a high-security key machine, and we have one at our South Tampa shop. We copy them, cut worn keys fresh from the key code, and cut new keys by VIN when there's no original, then program the chip. Walk in Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm, or call and we'll come to you.
Not sure which key you have? Match it here ↓What Makes a Key Laser-Cut
A regular key has notches cut into its edges. A laser-cut key, also called a sidewinder or high-security key, is a thicker blade with smooth edges and a wavy groove milled into its flat face. They're harder to copy, which is the point, and they show up on many Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Ford, GM, BMW, and Volkswagen keys, often as the blade that folds out of a flip key or hides inside a smart key.
Copy a Key
Bring the key you have. We trace it on our high-security machine and cut a new blade to match, as long as the original isn't worn.
Cut From the Code
For a worn key, or no key at all, we cut the blade to the factory key code, so it fits the way the original did when it was new.
Cut by VIN
Lost every key? With proof the car is yours, we get the key code using the VIN and cut a new key to it. See lost car key replacement.
Two Jobs in One Key
Most laser-cut keys are two things at once: a blade that turns the locks, and a chip or remote that talks to the car. Cutting the blade is the first job. If the key has a chip, it then has to be programmed to your car, or the new key will open the door and turn in the ignition but won't start the engine. See transponder key programming for how that works.
If the blade lives inside a remote or a smart key, the remote side is programmed too. See key fob and smart key replacement. Just need the blade inside your smart key replaced? We cut those as well.
When Your Key Is Worn and Sticking
Laser-cut keys wear down over years of use, and a worn key starts to stick in the door or the ignition. Copying it just copies the wear onto the new blade. We cut the new key from the key code instead, so it fits your locks the way the factory key did. If a key has already broken off in the ignition, broken key extraction is part of our automotive work, and so is ignition repair and replacement when the ignition itself is worn.
Down to one key that's starting to wear? That's the moment to get a spare cut from the code, while the car still starts.
What to Bring for a Laser-Cut Key
- Your car's year, make, and model, and the VIN from your registration, insurance card, or the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
- A photo ID plus the registration, title, or insurance documents. We need proof the car is yours to cut a key by code or VIN.
- The key you have, worn or not, and the car itself if the new key has a chip or remote that needs programming.
Makes That Often Use Laser-Cut Keys
Laser-cut blades are common on Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Ford, Chevy and GMC, BMW, and Volkswagen keys, among others. Whatever you drive, the VIN tells us exactly which key your car takes. See car keys by make for the rest.

How do I know if my car key is laser-cut?+
Look at the blade. A regular key has notches cut into its edges. A laser-cut key is thicker, with smooth edges and a wavy groove cut into the flat face of the blade. If the key folds out of a fob or slides out of a smart key, there's a good chance it's laser-cut.
Can you cut a key from my VIN?+
Yes. With proof that the car is yours, we can get the key code using the VIN and cut a new key to it on our machine. That's how we make a key when there's no original to copy. If the key has a chip, it's then programmed to the car.
My laser-cut key is worn and sticks. Should I copy it?+
No. Copying a worn key copies the wear onto the new blade. We cut the new key fresh from the key code instead, so it fits your locks and ignition the way the original did when it was new.
Can you copy a laser-cut key without the car?+
We can cut the blade without the car. But most laser-cut keys also have a chip or are part of a remote or smart key, and that part has to be programmed with the car present, or the copy will open the door but won't start the engine.
Will a hardware store copy of a laser-cut key work?+
Usually not. Most hardware-store key machines only cut keys with notches on the edge, and they can't program a chip. A laser-cut key needs a high-security key machine, and a chip key needs programming, which we do at the shop or on-site.
How much does a laser-cut key cost?+
Every car is different, so we don't post prices. What moves the number is whether it's a plain blade or a key with a chip or remote, whether we're copying a key or cutting from the code, and your make, model, and year. Call for a free quote, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
