Broken Case

Broken Case, Working Electronics

Most broken car keys aren't really broken inside. The plastic case cracks, the rubber button pad wears through, the loop for the key ring snaps, or a flip key stops locking open, while the circuit board and the chip still work fine. In those cases we move your original electronics into a new shell, which usually means nothing has to be reprogrammed.

New Shell

Cracked case, worn buttons, or a broken ring loop. Your board and chip move into a new shell, and the blade is cut if the key has one.

Flip Key Repair

A blade that won't lock open, flops loose, or won't flip out. We repair the spring, pin, or hinge, or fit a new flip shell.

Battery & Test

Short range or buttons that work some of the time? We test the fob and swap the battery, and tell you if it's something more.

Flip Keys

Flip Keys Take a Beating

Flip keys, where the blade folds into the fob, are common on Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, Chevy, and Mazda models, and the hinge gets flipped thousands of times. Eventually the spring wears out or a pin breaks. We repair the flip when we can and move the inside into a new flip shell when we can't. If the blade itself is worn, we cut a fresh one from the key code.

See our Volkswagen, Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai key pages for more on their flip keys, and laser-cut car keys if your blade has a groove down its face.

When It's More

When a New Shell Isn't Enough

If the fob went through the wash, landed in the pool or the bay, or the circuit board is cracked, a new case won't bring it back. Take the battery out right away if it got wet. Sometimes a fob dries out and works again, and sometimes it doesn't. When the electronics are done, we replace the fob and program the new one to your car. See key fob and smart key replacement.

We always tell you which it is before any work begins: a shell swap, a flip repair, or a new programmed key. And while you're here, a spare key means one broken fob never strands you.

Before You Come In

What to Bring

  • The key and every piece of it, including the blade, the board, the battery, and any loose buttons.
  • Your car's year, make, and model. If there's a chance the fob needs replacing, bring the car too, since a new fob is programmed to it.
  • A photo ID plus the registration, title, or insurance documents if we end up cutting or programming a new key.

FAQ

Key Shell & Flip Key Questions

Can you put my key fob in a new case?+

Usually, yes. If the circuit board and the chip inside still work, we move them into a new shell, cut the blade if the key has one, and test every button. You keep your original electronics, so in most cases nothing has to be reprogrammed.

My flip key blade won't stay open. Can you fix it?+

Yes. A flip key that won't lock open, flops loose, or won't flip out at all usually has a worn or broken spring, pin, or hinge. We repair the flip, or move the inside into a new flip shell when the old one is too far gone.

Is my fob dead, or is it just the battery?+

If the range has been getting shorter, or the buttons work some of the time, a weak battery is the usual cause. Bring it in and we'll test it. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, we'll tell you whether it's the board or the fob itself.

Does a new shell need programming?+

Usually not, because the original board and chip move over to the new shell. If the electronics are damaged and the fob has to be replaced, the new one is programmed to your car, and we tell you that before any work begins.

My key fob went in the pool or the bay. Can it be saved?+

Sometimes. Take the battery out right away and bring the fob in. If the board isn't damaged, a new battery and a dry-out may bring it back. If it is, we replace and program a new fob instead.

How much does key shell or flip key repair cost?+

Every key is different, so we don't post prices. What moves the number is whether it's a shell swap, a flip repair, or a full replacement, and the make and model of the key. Call or walk in for a free quote, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
