Nissan Key Replacement in Tampa
Lost your Nissan's smart key, or the car stopped recognizing it? We program Nissan Intelligent Keys and chip keys for most models, at our South Tampa shop or wherever the car is parked, Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm.
Intelligent Key or a Key You Turn
Many recent Nissans, including the Altima, Rogue, Sentra, and Pathfinder, use a push-button smart key that Nissan calls the Intelligent Key. It stays in your pocket or bag: you unlock the door with the button on the handle and start the car with the button on the dash. Tucked inside the fob is a mechanical key for the door, for the day the fob's battery runs out.
Older models and some base trims use a key you turn instead, with a transponder chip in the plastic head and the lock buttons either built into the head or on a separate remote. Either way, the car only starts on a key it recognizes, so a replacement has to be programmed to your Nissan, not just cut. If you're not sure which you have, the VIN tells us. More on each type: smart key and fob replacement and transponder key programming.
“Key Not Detected” Doesn't Always Mean a New Key
If your Nissan has started warning that it can't find the key, or the handle button and the start button work only some of the time, the fob isn't necessarily finished. Work through it in this order before you pay for anything:
- Battery first. A weak coin cell in the fob is a common cause and a simple fix, and on many fobs you can change it yourself.
- Your owner's manual explains how to start the car when the fob battery is low, so you can get home in the meantime.
- If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob may have lost its pairing with the car and need reprogramming, or its circuit board may be damaged.
- Lost, washed, or cracked beyond use? Then it's a replacement, programmed to the car.
Call (813) 832-4777 and tell us what the car is doing. We'll tell you which it sounds like before you spend anything.
Your Only Key Is Gone, or You Want a Second
Only key lost: a push-button Nissan with no Intelligent Key won't start, so we come to it: your driveway, your office lot, or wherever it's parked. Our service vans carry key cutting machines and programming tools, so the new key is programmed to the car on the spot, with no tow. In most cases we can still make one. See car key replacement for more, or car lockout help if the key is locked inside rather than lost.
Second key: if your Nissan came with one key, or you're down to one, a spare is worth making now. Dead fobs, lost fobs, and second fobs are all routine work for us, and adding a key while one still works is the simpler job. Walk in to 4556 S Manhattan Ave with the car and every key you have.
What to Have Ready for a Nissan Key
- Year and model, whether it's push-button start, and the VIN from your registration, insurance card, or the dash at the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
- A photo ID plus the registration, title, or insurance documents for the car.
- Every key you still have, including one the car no longer detects.
What Moves the Price, and the Dealer Option
We don't post Nissan key prices, because every car is different. An Intelligent Key and a key you turn are very different parts, and the model, the year, and whether you still have a working key all change the job. Call for a free quote and you'll have the price before any work begins.
A Nissan dealer can make a key too, typically with a service appointment and the car on site. For most Nissans, we make it without the appointment, at the shop or where the car is parked, usually in a single visit. Rare or very new models may need the key ordered first, and we tell you on the phone which category yours falls into. Other makes are on our car keys by makepage, and if you're near the shop, our South Tampa locksmith page covers the neighborhoods around it.

Call (813) 832-4777Nissan Key Questions
Can you replace a lost Nissan Intelligent Key?+
Yes, for most models. With no key, the car can't be driven to us, so we come to it and program a new smart key to your Nissan, then cut the mechanical key inside to your door lock. Lost all your keys with no spare? In most cases we can still make one.
My Nissan says the key isn't detected. Do I need a new one?+
Not necessarily. Start with the battery in the fob; a weak coin cell is a common cause and a simple fix. Your owner's manual explains how to start the car when the fob battery is low. If a fresh battery doesn't help, the fob may need reprogramming or replacing. Call (813) 832-4777 and tell us what the car is doing.
Can you add a second Intelligent Key while I still have one?+
Yes, and it's the simpler job. Drive the Nissan to 4556 S Manhattan Ave with the key you have; walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm. Bring every key you want to keep, since some cars clear keys that aren't present when a new one is added.
Does my older Nissan key need to be programmed?+
If it has a plastic head, it very likely carries a transponder chip, and a copy won't start the car until that chip is programmed to it. We cut the blade and program the chip, and the remote too if your key has buttons.
How much does Nissan key replacement cost?+
Every car is different, so we don't post prices. A push-button Intelligent Key and a key you turn are different parts, and your model and year and whether you still have a working key matter too. Call for a free quote, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
