Master Key Systems for Tampa Businesses
One key per person, and each key opens only what it should. We design, install, and rekey master key systems for Tampa offices, storefronts, landlords, and property managers, with Mul-T-Lock restricted keyways when copies need to be controlled.
One Key Per Person, Opening Only What It Should
A master key system is a set of locks keyed in levels. Every lock has its own key, and higher-level keys open groups of locks, so nobody carries a ring of twenty keys and nobody carries a key to rooms they have no reason to enter. In a Tampa office building, retail center, or rental property, the levels usually break down like this:
Change Keys
Open one door or one suite. The key an employee, a tenant, or a single-office user carries.
Master Keys
Open a group of locks: a floor, a department, or every unit in one building. The key a manager or maintenance lead carries.
Grand Master
Opens everything in the system. Usually held by the owner or the property manager, and by as few people as possible.
Keyed-Alike Groups
Several doors on one key where that makes sense, such as an office's front and back doors or a row of storage rooms.
Designed on Paper Before a Key Gets Cut
A master key system only works if it's planned. Before anything is cut, we walk the property with you and map who needs to open what: staff, tenants, managers, maintenance, and outside vendors. That becomes a keying chart, a written record of which key opens which lock, and you keep it. We leave room in the design for growth, so adding a suite or a building later extends the system instead of starting it over.
Without a chart, systems drift. Keys get added on the fly, nobody is sure what the old master still opens, and the maintenance office ends up with a drawer of unlabeled keys. If you've inherited a system like that, we can sort out what you have and rekey it back into a plan.

Mul-T-Lock Restricted Keyways: Keys a Kiosk Can't Copy
A standard key can be copied at most hardware stores, and “Do Not Duplicate” stamped on it is a request, not a control. A restricted keyway closes that gap. As a Mul-T-Lock authorized dealer, we can put your system on Mul-T-Lock restricted keys whose blanks copy shops don't carry, so new keys come only through an authorized dealer, and only for people you approve. You know how many keys exist and who holds each one.
Mul-T-Lock high-security cylinders also add pick and drill resistance on the doors that need it most, like the main entrance, the stockroom, or the office that holds records. Not every door needs that level, and we'll say so: a system can mix restricted cylinders on critical doors with standard ones elsewhere.
Commercial Rekeys After Staff and Tenant Turnover
Most master key work starts with someone leaving: an employee, a manager, a tenant, or a property management company. When a key walks out the door, the locks it opened need to be rekeyed. On a documented system that's targeted work. We rekey the locks the departed key opened, not every lock in the building, and update your chart and key count. If the key was a master, the locks under it get rekeyed too.
For landlords and property managers, the same idea runs unit by unit: rekey between tenants, keep every unit under your master, and keep maintenance on one key. If some doors are moving to codes or credentials at the same time, see commercial access control for keypad, key card, and key fob entry.
Panic Bars, Exit Devices, and the Rest of the Door
A master key system lives in real doors, and commercial doors carry more than a lock: panic bars and exit devices on the exits, closers on the entrances, and cabinet, desk, and mailbox locks inside. We service panic hardware and exit devices as part of our commercial work, and cabinet and mailbox locks can be keyed alike where the lock allows, so the keyed side of the building stays on one plan.
For storefront doors and exit hardware, see our commercial locksmith services. If your business also runs vans or trucks, vehicle keys need the same discipline: see fleet and company vehicle keys. What is a master key system?+
A set of locks keyed in levels. Each lock has its own change key, and master keys open groups of locks, so a manager carries one key for the doors they oversee while everyone else carries a key to only their own door. A grand master opens everything in the system and is held by as few people as possible.
Can you build a master key system around our existing locks?+
Often, yes. Many existing commercial cylinders can be rekeyed into a master system rather than replaced. Worn or light-duty hardware, or doors moving to restricted keys, may need new cylinders. We'll tell you which doors need what during the walkthrough, before any work begins.
Do we have to rekey the whole building when someone leaves?+
Usually not. On a documented system, we rekey the locks the departed key opened and update your keying chart. If that person held a master or grand master key, more locks are affected, which is one reason to keep those keys with as few people as possible.
What is a restricted keyway, and do we need one?+
A restricted keyway uses key blanks that hardware stores and kiosks don't carry, so copies come only through an authorized dealer, for people you approve. We're a Mul-T-Lock authorized dealer. It's worth it when keys have gone missing before, or when you need to know exactly how many keys exist.
Do you work with landlords and property managers?+
Yes. We set up units under a landlord or property-manager master, rekey between tenants, and keep the keying chart current as units turn over, so maintenance carries one key instead of a ring. Call (813) 832-4777 to set up a walkthrough.
How much does a master key system cost?+
It depends on the number of doors, whether existing cylinders can be rekeyed or need replacing, and whether you choose standard or restricted keys, so we don't post prices. Quotes are free: we walk the property and you get a written price before any work begins.
