Honda Key Replacement in Tampa
Lost the key to your Civic, Accord, CR-V, or Pilot, or want a spare before that happens? We cut and program Honda keys for most models, at our South Tampa shop or wherever the car is parked, Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm.
Which Honda Key Do You Have?
Honda has used three main kinds of keys, and the one your car takes depends on the model, the year, and often the trim. Two Hondas from the same model year can use completely different keys: an upper trim may have come with a push-button smart key while the base trim of the same model kept a key you turn. That's why we ask for the VIN when you call. It tells us exactly which key your Honda came with.
Chip Key
A cut blade with a transponder chip in the plastic head, sometimes paired with a separate remote on the ring. Found on older Hondas. More on transponder key programming.
Remote-Head or Flip Key
The lock, unlock, and trunk buttons live in the key head, and on some models the blade folds away. The blade is cut, and the chip and the remote are both programmed to the car.
Smart Key (Push-Button Start)
Stays in your pocket or bag while you unlock and start the car. An emergency blade inside is cut to your door lock. More on smart key replacement.
Won't Start, Won't Lock, or Both?
On many Hondas with a remote-head key, the chip that lets the engine run and the buttons that work the locks are programmed separately. So a key can unlock the doors and still not start the car, or start the car while the buttons do nothing. Those are different problems with different fixes, and the second one is sometimes just a tired remote battery.
When you call, tell us which it is: won't start, won't lock, or both. If someone copied your key at a hardware store and the copy turns in the ignition but the engine won't run, the chip was never programmed to your Honda. We cut the blade and program the chip so the key does everything the original does.
A Spare for Your Honda, or a Replacement
You still have one working key: then you need a spare, and it's the simpler job. Drive the Honda to our shop at 4556 S Manhattan Ave with the key you have. Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm. Bring every key you want to keep using, because on some cars, programming a new key erases any key that isn't present.
Every key is gone: then it's a car key replacement, and in most cases we can still make one. The Honda can't be driven to us, so we come to it. Our service vans carry key cutting machines and programming tools, so the key is cut and programmed where the car is parked, with no tow. If the keys are only locked inside, that's a car lockout, not a new key. Near the shop? Our South Tampa locksmith page covers the neighborhoods around it.
What to Have Ready for a Honda Key
- Your Honda's year, model, and trim, plus the VIN. The VIN is on your registration and insurance card, and on the dash at the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
- A photo ID plus the registration, title, or insurance documents for the car. If it isn't registered in your name, call first and we'll tell you what we need.
- Every key and fob you still have for the car, including ones that no longer work.
What Affects the Cost, and the Dealer Question
We don't post Honda key prices, because every car is different. The biggest factor is the type of key: a chip key, a remote-head or flip key, or a push-button smart key. Your model, year, and trim decide which one that is, and replacing your only key takes more steps than adding a spare. Call for a free quote, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
A Honda dealer can make a key too, typically with a service appointment and the car on site. For most Hondas, we make the same key without the appointment, usually in a single visit. Rare or very new models may need the key ordered first, and we tell you on the phone which category yours falls into, before you drive over or we head out. Driving something else? Call (813) 832-4777Honda Key Questions
Can you make a Honda key if I've lost every one?+
Usually, yes. Lost all your keys with no spare? In most cases we can still make one. With no key to drive the Honda, we come to it: your driveway, your office, or the lot where it's parked. Call (813) 832-4777 with the year, model, and VIN.
Why does my Honda's trim level matter for the key?+
On many Honda models, the key depends on the trim as well as the year. A higher trim may have come with a push-button smart key while the base trim of the same model used a key you turn. The VIN tells us exactly which key your Honda came with, so have it handy when you call.
My Honda key unlocks the doors but the car won't start. Why?+
On many Hondas the buttons that work the locks and the chip that lets the engine run are separate. A key copied without its chip programmed to the car will often open the doors and still not start it. Tell us exactly what your key does and doesn't do when you call, and we'll tell you what it sounds like.
How much does Honda key replacement cost?+
Every car is different, so we don't post prices. What moves the number is the type of key (a chip key, a remote-head or flip key, or a smart key), your model, year, and trim, and whether you're adding a spare or replacing your only key. Call (813) 832-4777 for a free quote, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
Can I bring my Honda to your shop?+
Yes. Drive it to 4556 S Manhattan Ave in South Tampa (33611) with the key you have. Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm, and calling ahead with your year, model, and trim lets us confirm the right key is on hand.
