Key Fob Replacement & Programming in Tampa
Replacement fobs, remotes, and push-to-start smart keys, programmed to your car for most makes and models. Bring the car to our South Tampa shop, walk-ins welcome Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm, or we'll come to wherever it's parked.
Which Kind of Fob Do You Have?
“Key fob” covers several different parts, and the type decides how it's replaced. Most fobs do two jobs: a remote that locks and unlocks the doors, and a transponder chip or smart-key signal the car checks before it will start. Both have to be programmed to your car. We replace and program all four of the common types below for most makes and models.
Remote-Head Key
A key blade with lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built into the head. The blade is cut to your car; the remote and the chip inside are programmed to it.
Flip Key
The blade folds into the fob and springs out at the press of a button. Inside, it works like a remote-head key: a blade to cut, plus a remote and a chip to program.
Separate Remote
A small remote on the key ring next to a plain or chip key. It only locks and unlocks; the key does the starting. Replacing it means programming the remote to the car.
Smart Key / Push-to-Start
Stays in your pocket or bag. The car senses it nearby, unlocks at the handle, and starts at the button. Most hide an emergency blade inside, cut to your door lock.
Replace or Reprogram?
Not every fob problem needs a new fob. When a remote stops working, the cause is often one of three things: a coin cell battery that's run down, a fob that has lost its pairing with the car, or a damaged circuit board. A battery is a simple fix, and on many fobs you can do it yourself. A fob that's lost its pairing can be reprogrammed to the car.
A new fob makes sense when the old one is lost, has been through the wash, or has a dead board, or when your car only came with one fob and you want a second before anything goes wrong. Dead fobs, lost fobs, and second fobs are all routine work for us. Tell us on the phone what yours is doing and we'll tell you which it sounds like.
Push-to-Start Smart Key Replacement
Smart keys involve more programming than a basic remote. The car has to learn the new fob both as a key it trusts at the start button and as a remote for the doors, and the emergency blade inside has to be cut to your door lock. On some push-to-start cars, programming a new smart key also clears any fob that isn't present, so have every fob you want to keep working on hand. If you've lost your only smart key, the car can't be driven to us, so we come to it.
Bring It to the Shop, or We Come to You
Our shop is at 4556 S Manhattan Ave, Tampa, FL 33611. If you have a working key or fob, drive in: walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm, and the car needs to come along because the new fob is programmed to the vehicle. Call ahead at (813) 832-4777 with your year, make, and model so we can tell you whether the fob for your car is ready to go or needs to be ordered.
If the car can't come to us, our service vans carry key cutting machines and programming tools, so the fob is programmed where it's parked, with no tow and no dealership appointment. Near the shop? Our South Tampa locksmith page covers the neighborhoods around it. Our techs work in English or Spanish.

What to Have Ready
- Every fob and key you still have for the car, including ones that no longer work.
- Your year, make, and model, plus the VIN from your registration, your insurance card, or the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
- Proof the car is yours: a driver's license plus the vehicle registration is standard. If the registration isn't in your name, call first and we'll tell you what we need.
What Affects the Price, and the Dealer Question
We don't post fob prices. The fob type matters most: a separate remote, a remote-head key, a flip key, and a push-to-start smart key are very different parts. Your year, make, and model matter too, as does whether you're adding a fob or replacing your only one. Most fob jobs are handled in a single visit; for a rare import or a very new model, the fob may need to be ordered first, and we'll tell you up front.
A dealer can sell and program a fob for your car as well, typically through a service appointment with the car on site. For most makes, we do the same programming without the appointment, at the shop or wherever the car is parked. Fob pricing varies by car at both, so get a quote from each. Ours is free by phone, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
Car Fobs and Building Fobs
Fobs are part of our work beyond cars, too. We install and program key fob and key card door systems for Tampa businesses and program fobs for condo buildings, all covered on our keyless entry and access control page. The technology differs: a building fob is a credential inside an access system, while a car fob is paired to one vehicle. If you look after both, it's one call.
If your key has no buttons, see transponder key programming. For a backup made while you still have a working key, see spare car keys. Lost every key? Our car key replacement page covers it, and for keys locked inside the car, see car lockout help.

Call (813) 832-4777Key Fob Questions
My key fob stopped working. Do I need a new one?+
Not always. Start with the battery: a weak coin cell is a simple fix. If a fresh battery doesn't help, the fob may have lost its pairing with the car and need reprogramming, or the circuit board may be damaged. Call (813) 832-4777, tell us what it's doing, and we'll tell you which it sounds like before you spend anything.
Can you replace a push-to-start smart key?+
Yes. We program replacement smart keys and proximity fobs for most makes and models, and cut the emergency blade inside if your fob has one. If you've lost your only smart key, we come to the car. Have every fob you still own on hand, since some cars clear fobs that aren't present during programming.
Can I get a second fob for a car that only came with one?+
Yes. Adding a fob while you still have a working one is usually simpler than replacing the only one after it's gone, so it's worth doing early. Drive the car to our shop at 4556 S Manhattan Ave with your current fob, Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm, or we'll come to you.
Do I have to go to the dealer to program a key fob?+
No. For most makes and models, we program fobs, remotes, and smart keys at our South Tampa shop or on-site, with no dealership appointment and no tow. For a rare import or a very new model, call first and we'll verify your car.
How much does key fob replacement cost in Tampa?+
It depends on the fob type (a separate remote, a remote-head key, a flip key, or a push-to-start smart key), your year, make, and model, and whether you still have a working fob. We don't post prices. Call (813) 832-4777 for a free quote, and you'll have the number before any work begins.
Do you also program fobs for building doors and condo access?+
Yes. That's part of our keyless entry and access control work: key fob and key card door systems for Tampa businesses, and fob programming for condo buildings. It's separate from your car fob, but it's the same phone number: (813) 832-4777, Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm.
