Ford Keys

Ford Has Used Every Kind of Key

Over the years, Ford has put just about every style of car key on the road, sometimes on the same model in different years or trims. Which one your Ford takes depends on the model, the year, and the trim, and the VIN settles it. These are the four you're most likely to find on the key ring of an F-150, Escape, Explorer, Ranger, Mustang, or Transit.

Chip Key + Separate Remote

A cut blade with a chip in the head, and the lock buttons on a separate remote. The chip has to be programmed for the truck to start. See transponder key programming.

Remote-Head Key

The blade, the chip, and the lock and unlock buttons in one key. The blade is cut, and both the chip and the remote are programmed to the vehicle.

Flip Key

The blade folds into the fob and springs out at a button press. Inside, it works like a remote-head key.

Push-Button Fob

On many newer Fords, the fob stays in your pocket and the truck starts at a button. Most hide an emergency blade for the door. See key fob replacement.

Door Keypad

The Door Keypad Gets You In, Not Going

Many Fords have a number keypad on the driver's door. If yours does and you know the code, you can unlock the car without a key, which is handy when the key is sitting in the cupholder. But the keypad only works the locks. The engine still needs a key or fob the vehicle recognizes.

So if the key is locked inside and you know the code, use it and you're done. If you don't know the code and the key is inside, that's a car lockout. And if the key is actually lost, the keypad won't help you drive away: you need a replacement key programmed to the vehicle.

Work Trucks

Work Trucks, Vans, and Shared Vehicles

A truck that more than one person drives needs more than one key. We cut and program spare keysso each driver has their own, and we test every one on the vehicle. Bring the truck and every key you want to keep using: on some vehicles, programming a new key erases any key that isn't present.

When every key to a work truck is gone, the truck can't come to us, so we go to it, whether it's parked at home, at the shop, or on a job site. Lost every key with no spare? In most cases we can still make one. Our service vans carry key cutting machines and programming tools, so the key is made where the truck is parked, with no tow. If the vehicle is registered to a business rather than to you, call first and we'll tell you what we need.

Before You Call

What to Have Ready for a Ford Key

  • The year, model, and trim, and the VIN from the registration, the insurance card, or the dash at the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
  • A photo ID plus the registration, title, or insurance documents for the vehicle, and for a company vehicle, a call ahead so we can tell you what else we need.
  • Every key and fob for the vehicle you want to keep working.
Cost & Dealer

What Moves the Price, and When the Dealer Fits

We don't post Ford key prices, because every vehicle is different. The type of key matters most: a chip key with a separate remote, a remote-head or flip key, or a push-button fob. The model and year matter, and so does whether you still have a working key, since replacing the only one takes more steps than adding a spare. Call for a free quote and you'll have the price before any work begins.

A Ford dealer can make a key too, and if the truck is already booked in for service there, that can be convenient. Otherwise, for most Fords we make the key without a dealership appointment, usually in a single visit. Rare or very new models may need the key ordered first, and we tell you on the phone which category yours falls into. For other makes, see car keys by make; to replace the only key on any vehicle, see car key replacement. Near the shop? Our South Tampa locksmith page covers the neighborhoods around it.

FAQ

Ford Key Questions

Can you make a key for my F-150?+

Yes. Ford pickups are part of our Ford work, for most models. If the truck still has a working key, drive it to the shop. If every key is gone, we come to the truck, at home or on the job site. Call (813) 832-4777 with the year, model, and VIN.

My Ford has a keypad on the door. Do I still need a new key?+

If you know the code, the keypad will let you into the car, which helps when the key is locked inside. But the keypad only works the locks. The engine still needs a key or fob the truck recognizes, so if the key is lost rather than locked in, you need a replacement.

The truck is registered to my company. Can you still make a key?+

Call first. A photo ID plus the vehicle registration is standard, and when the registration isn't in your name, we'll tell you on the phone what we need to see before anyone comes out.

Can you make spare keys for everyone who drives the truck?+

Yes. Bring the truck and every key you want to keep using, because on some vehicles, programming a new key erases any key that isn't present. We test each key on the truck before we're done.

How much does Ford key replacement cost?+

Every vehicle is different, so we don't post prices. What moves the number is the type of key (a chip key, a remote-head or flip key, or a push-button fob), the model and year, and whether you still have a working key. Call for a free quote, and you'll have the price before any work begins.
