Acura Key Replacement in Tampa
A worn laser-cut key on an older TL, a remote that quit on an ILX, or the only smart key to an MDX gone missing: we cut and program Acura keys for most models. Bring the car to our South Tampa shop, or we'll come to wherever it's parked.
Laser-Cut, Remote-Head, or Smart Key
Acura is Honda's luxury brand, and the two share most of their key types. On a lot of key-start Acuras, the key is a laser-cut blade with a chip in it, and on many of those the lock and unlock buttons are built into the head of the key. The newer MDX, RDX, TLX, and Integra generally start with a button and a smart key instead, which has a metal blade that slides out for the door. The ILX has used more than one of these over its run, so the VIN is the quickest way to know which one yours needs.
Laser-Cut Chip Key
A thicker blade with a groove milled down its face, plus a chip the car has to recognize. More on laser-cut car keys.
Remote-Head Key
Blade, chip, and lock buttons in one piece. The blade gets cut, then the chip and the remote are each programmed to the car.
Smart Key
Rides in a pocket while the doors unlock and the start button works. The blade inside it is cut to your door. See key fob and smart key replacement.
The Groove-Cut Blade on Many Acura Keys
Hold an older Acura key next to a basic house key and the difference is easy to see. Instead of notches along the edge, the cut is a wavy groove milled into the flat face of the blade. A standard key duplicator can't reproduce that, which is why many hardware-store counters turn these keys away. We cut them on our own laser-cut key machine at the shop.
On a high-mileage Acura, the groove wears down over the years, and a key that used to slide in smoothly starts to catch in the door or the ignition. Copying that key copies the wear. We can cut a fresh blade from the key code tied to your VIN instead, back to the original shape, and then program its chip so it starts the car. If the key turns fine but the ignition is the part that's worn, we repair or replace the ignition too.
Lost the Only Smart Key to Your Acura
An MDX or RDX with push-button start won't move without a smart key in range, so losing the only one leaves the car stuck wherever it is: a Westchase driveway, a school pickup lot, a garage near the office. We bring the tools to it, program a new smart key to the car, and cut the blade that hides inside so the door lock works too. There's no tow involved. Our lost car key replacement page covers what to have ready.
If a second smart key might be in a drawer somewhere, track it down before the appointment and keep it with you. Programming a new key can leave out any key that isn't there at the time. Still have one working key? Adding a spare now is the easier job, and you can drive the Acura to the shop for it.
What to Have Ready for an Acura Key
- The model, the year, and whether the Acura starts with a button or a key you turn. The VIN helps most: look on the registration or the insurance card, or read it through the lower driver's-side corner of the windshield.
- A photo ID along with the registration, the title, or an insurance card showing the car is yours.
- Every key or fob you have for it, including a worn key that sticks or a remote that no longer works.
Pricing an Acura Key, and the Dealer Route
There's no Acura price list on this page because the key itself sets most of the cost. A laser-cut chip key, a remote-head key, and a smart key each take different parts and steps, and a car with no working key needs more than one that only needs a second. One call gets you a free quote.
An Acura dealer can make the key as well, usually by appointment with the car brought in. For most Acura models we handle it at 4556 S Manhattan Ave or at the car, without that appointment. If a very new model needs its key ordered first, we say so during the call. Our Honda key page covers the rest of the family, and our South Tampa locksmith page covers the neighborhoods near the shop.

Can you cut a laser-cut Acura key?+
Yes. Many Acura keys have a blade with the cut milled into its face instead of notches on the edge, and we cut those on our own laser-cut key machine. We can work from a key you still have or from the key code tied to your VIN, then program the chip so the engine starts.
My Acura has push-button start. Can you make a new smart key for it?+
Yes, for most models. The new smart key is programmed to your Acura, and the metal blade that slides out of it is cut to fit the driver's door. If the only smart key is gone, the car won't start, so we program the replacement where the car is parked.
Will a Honda key work on my Acura?+
Not as-is. Acura is Honda's luxury brand and the two share many general key types, but every key still has to be cut to your Acura's locks and programmed to that specific car. Tell us the year, model, and VIN, and we'll confirm which key yours takes.
My Acura key sticks in the ignition. Which part is worn?+
Often it's the key. Years of use can round off the groove on a laser-cut blade, and a copy of a worn key copies the wear too. A key cut fresh from the code usually turns smoothly again. If a new key still sticks, the ignition itself may need repair, which we also do. Don't force a key that won't turn.
How much does Acura key replacement cost?+
We quote it rather than post a price list, because the key decides the number. Laser-cut chip keys, remote-head keys, and smart keys each have their own parts and steps, and starting with no working key takes more than adding one while a key still works. Call (813) 832-4777 for a free quote, and the price is settled before any cutting starts.
