What a Mercedes-Benz Key Really Is

Most Mercedes-Benz models don't use a blade you cut and turn. The key is an electronic fob. On many models it slides into a slot in the dash and turns there; on many others with keyless start, it stays in your pocket while you press the start button. Tucked inside most of them is a small emergency blade for the driver's door, for the day the fob or the car's battery gives out.

Fob That Turns in the Dash

The whole fob goes into the ignition slot and turns like a key. The electronics do the work, which is why a cut blade on its own will never start the car.

Keyless-Start Fob

Stays in a pocket or bag, and the doors and start button respond when it's close. It still has a shell, a battery, and an emergency blade that can wear out.

Emergency Blade

The laser-cut blade hidden in the fob that opens the driver's door. We cut new ones on our high-security machine. See laser-cut car keys.

2015 and Newer: New Keys Come From the Dealer

Here's the plain answer, because you should have it before anyone drives anywhere. For a Mercedes-Benz from the 2015 model year or newer, a new or replacement key comes only from the Mercedes dealer. No locksmith can program those keys, and we can't either. If you call us about one, we'll tell you so on the phone instead of booking a visit that can't end with a working key.

That still leaves plenty we can do for a newer Mercedes. Locked out? We get you back in. Cracked case or worn buttons? We move the electronics into a new shell. We also replace the fob battery and cut a new emergency blade. And if your Mercedes is down to one key, it's worth ordering a second from the dealer before that one fails.

2014 and Older

We make new keys for most models. Call with the VIN, and we confirm yours before anything is scheduled.

2015 and Newer

New and replacement keys come only from the Mercedes dealer; no locksmith can program them, us included. Lockouts, fob shells, batteries, and emergency blades we still handle.

What We Can Do

What We Can Do for Your Mercedes

These are the Mercedes jobs we handle, at our shop at 4556 S Manhattan Ave or where the car is parked. Everything here works on any model year except the new key, which is for 2014 and older:

  • Check your car by VIN. Before anything is scheduled, we look up your Mercedes and tell you what we can and can't do for it.
  • Make a new key for most 2014 and older Mercedes-Benz models, once the VIN check confirms yours.
  • Repair the fob shell. Cracked case, worn buttons, a broken battery cover or key-ring loop: your electronics move into a new shell. See key shell repair.
  • Replace the fob battery and test the fob, so you know whether the battery was the whole problem.
  • Cut a new emergency blade on our laser-cut key machine when the one in your fob is lost, broken, or worn.
  • Get you back in when the keys are locked inside. See car lockout help.

Same VIN-first approach as our BMW key page.

Sprinter Vans

Sprinter Vans in a Work Fleet

Mercedes Sprinter vans are a common sight in Tampa contractor and delivery fleets, and their keys differ by generation. Lockouts, worn fob shells, batteries, and emergency blades we handle on any Sprinter, at the shop or at the job site.

A new Sprinter key follows the same year line as the cars: for a 2015 or newer van, it comes from the Mercedes dealer, and for an older one, we check the VIN and tell you up front whether it's a key we can make. Running more than one van? Our fleet and company vehicle keys page covers keeping a key for every driver.

Before You Call

What to Have Ready for a Mercedes

  • The model year and the VIN first: the year tells us right away whether a new key is our job or the dealer's. The VIN is on the registration, the insurance card, and the dash at the base of the windshield, driver's side.
  • A photo ID and the registration, title, or insurance card in your name. If the car or van belongs to a company, tell us when you call.
  • The fob, every piece of it, even if it's cracked or dead, plus any other keys for the car.
Process

How It Works

  1. Step 1

    Start With the Year

Call (813) 832-4777 with the year, VIN, and model, and tell us what's wrong: a broken fob, a dead fob, a lost key, or a lockout.

  2. Step 2

    Get a Straight Answer

We tell you what we can do for your Mercedes, whether a new key is a dealer job (any 2015 or newer), and the price for our part, before anything is scheduled.

  3. Step 3

    Repair, Cut, Open, or Make

A shell or battery at the shop, a new emergency blade on our machine, a lockout where the car is parked, or a new key for most 2014 and older models.

  4. Step 4

    Test It With You

Whatever we worked on gets tested at the car: the fob on the doors and the start, the blade in the driver's door.

FAQ

Mercedes-Benz Key Questions

Can you make a new key for my Mercedes?+

It depends on the year. For a 2015 or newer Mercedes-Benz, no: new and replacement keys come only from the Mercedes dealer, and no locksmith can program them, us included. For 2014 and older, yes, for most models. Call with the VIN and we'll confirm yours before anything is scheduled. Whatever the year, we can still get you in when you're locked out, repair the fob shell, replace the battery, and cut the emergency blade.

The case on my Mercedes key is cracked. Can you fix it?+

In most cases, yes, and on any model year. If the electronics still work, we move them into a new fob shell and fit a fresh battery. Walk in to 4556 S Manhattan Ave with the key, and bring any loose pieces.

My Mercedes fob is dead and the car is locked. How do I get in?+

Most Mercedes fobs have an emergency blade inside. Slide the release on the fob, pull the blade out, and use it in the driver's door. If the blade is missing or broken, we can cut a new one on our laser-cut key machine, or come out and open the car for you.

Do you work on Mercedes Sprinter vans?+

Yes, for lockouts, fob shells, batteries, and emergency blades on any Sprinter. A new Sprinter key follows the same year line as the cars: for a 2015 or newer van it comes from the Mercedes dealer, and for an older one we check the VIN and tell you up front whether it's a key we can make.

How much does Mercedes key work cost?+

It depends on the job. A battery, a new shell, an emergency blade, a lockout, and a new key for a 2014 or older model are each priced differently, and we quote them for free before any work begins. If your Mercedes is 2015 or newer and needs a new key, we'll tell you on the phone that it's a dealer job.
