Car Ignition Repair in Tampa
Key stuck in the ignition, refusing to turn, or snapped off inside? Don't force it. We extract broken keys, fix or replace a worn ignition cylinder, and make keys to match. If the car still drives, bring it to our South Tampa shop, 8am to 8pm, Monday through Saturday. If it doesn't, we come to it.
Key Stuck or Won't Turn? Do This First
Short answer
Check two things: that the gear selector sits fully in Park, and that the steering wheel isn't locked. Rock the wheel gently side to side as you turn the key. If the key still won't turn or come out, leave it alone and call (813) 832-4777.
- Don't force it. A key pushed too hard can bend or break off inside.
- Already broken off? Leave the piece in the ignition, skip the glue, and keep the half you're holding for the new key.
- Push-button car? The steps above are for keys you turn; see push-to-start trouble below.
What the Key Is Telling You
Key Won't Turn
It slides in but won't rotate. If easing the wheel doesn't free it, the cause is often wear on the key, in the ignition, or both.
Key Won't Come Out
The engine is off, but the key stays put. Run through the steps above first. Still stuck? Don't yank it; call us.
Broken Off Inside
We extract the piece, make sure the ignition still works, and make a replacement key, with the chip programmed if the old one had one.
Turns, but the Engine Won't Run
If a key you just had copied turns but won't start the car, its chip was likely never programmed. See transponder key programming.
Takes a Few Tries
A key that needs coaxing is a sign of wear. Fix it now, and while one key still works, get a spare cut too.
Worn Key or Worn Ignition?
From the driver's seat the two feel alike, but they're fixed differently, so we look at the blade, try every key you brought, and check how the cylinder turns before quoting. A worn key is replaced by a fresh one cut to the factory code, because copying it would copy the wear; see laser-cut car keys.
If the ignition is the worn or damaged part, we fix it when a repair will hold and put in a new cylinder when it won't. Either way, the keys we cut fit the new or repaired ignition, so if one key opened the doors and started the car before, one key still does. On a chip-key car, any new key gets its chip programmed to the car.
Push-to-Start Car Won't Start?
If a push-button car won't start and the dash shows a key warning, suspect the smart key first: a weak coin cell, a fob that has lost its pairing, or a damaged board. Try a fresh battery, and look in your owner's manual for starting on a weak fob, which often means holding the fob near the start button.
Still nothing? The fob may need reprogramming or replacing; see smart key replacement. The immobilizer only runs the engine for a key programmed to the car, and transponder key programming explains how. If the fob checks out, we'll tell you before you spend anything on a new one.
Drive It In, or We Come to the Car
If the car starts and you can drive it safely, bring it to 4556 S Manhattan Ave, Tampa, FL 33611. Walk-ins are welcome 8am to 8pm, Monday through Saturday, and the shop is closed Sunday. If the key won't turn or a piece is stuck inside, we come to the car instead, wherever it's parked in Hillsborough or Pinellas. Our service vans carry key cutting machines and programming tools, so there's no tow.
The Locksmith Shop has been family-owned since 2009. We're licensed and insured, our techs are bonded, background-checked, and work in English or Spanish, and there's a military discount; just ask.

When It's a Job for the Dealer
Ignition repair, broken key extraction, and matching keys are work we do ourselves, with no dealership appointment. The firm exception is a Mercedes-Benz from model year 2015 or later, where every locksmith, our shop included, has to send you to the dealer for keys. On those cars we're limited to lockouts, emergency blades, and fob battery and case work (see Mercedes keys, 2015 and newer). Some very new models have to wait while the key is ordered, and some of the newest Volkswagen and Audi models are dealer-only. We look up your car by its VIN before quoting and tell you which, if any, applies.
What to Have Ready
- Year, make, model, and the VIN, found on your registration or insurance card.
- How the key is behaving, and whether a second key, if you have one, does the same.
- Every key for the car, the half of any broken key, and a photo ID plus the registration, title, or insurance documents if a new key is cut.
How It Works

Each key has to turn smoothly, come back out, and start the car before we're done.

Call (813) 832-4777Ignition Repair Questions
How do I get a key unstuck from the ignition?+
Check that the gear selector sits fully in Park, then rock the steering wheel gently side to side as you turn the key; a locked steering column often pins it. If it won't move, stop and call (813) 832-4777 before the key bends or snaps.
Is my key worn, or is it the ignition?+
Either one, or both. We look at the blade and the cylinder and say which it is before quoting. A worn key calls for a new one cut from the factory code, and a worn ignition for a repair or a new cylinder.
Can you remove a key that broke off in the ignition?+
Yes. Leave the piece where it is, skip the glue, and keep the other half. We extract it, check that the ignition still turns as it should, then make a replacement key and program its chip if the old key had one.
Do you replace ignition cylinders?+
Yes. If a repair will hold, we fix the ignition; if not, we put in a new cylinder and cut keys to fit it. That includes ignitions damaged by thieves.
Can I drive my car to your shop for ignition repair?+
If it starts and you can drive it safely, yes: walk-ins are welcome at 4556 S Manhattan Ave in South Tampa (33611), 8am to 8pm, Monday through Saturday. If the key won't turn, we come to the car.
Is ignition repair a dealer-only job?+
For most cars, no. We repair and replace ignitions and make matching keys ourselves. A Mercedes-Benz from model year 2015 or later is the firm exception: its keys are a dealer-only part, so we don't take on key or ignition work for those cars. We still handle lockouts, emergency blades, and fob batteries and cases on them. Some of the newest Volkswagen and Audi models are dealer-only for keys as well, and we tell you before quoting if yours is one.
How much does ignition repair cost?+
We don't post prices, because it depends on what we find (a key that only needs a fresh cut, a broken piece to extract, or a cylinder to repair or replace) and on your year, make, and model. Call (813) 832-4777 for a free quote before any work begins.
