Lake Magdalene Locksmith
Older Homes, Keypads & Car Keys
Lake neighborhoods, houses mostly from the 1970s and '80s, condos and apartments, and shopping strips on Dale Mabry and Florida Avenue. We rekey and upgrade older locks, set up keypads for family and caregivers, look after business doors, and make car keys for most makes.
The locksmith Lake Magdalene trusts
Lake Magdalene, an unincorporated community of 30,742 people at the 2020 census, is named for the 206-acre freshwater lake near its center, one of at least eleven named lakes inside its lines. Dale Mabry Highway forms its western edge and I-275 its eastern one, with Lutz to the north, the University area to the east, the City of Tampa to the south, Carrollwood to the southwest and Northdale to the west. Residents are spread over three ZIP codes, 33618, 33613 and 33612. The Locksmith Shop has been run by the same family since 2009, keeps its storefront at 4556 S Manhattan Ave in South Tampa, and comes to your door here. Phone (813) 832-4777 and you'll get a free quote before any work starts.
The area received its first post office in 1888. Bearss Avenue, the busy east-west road through north Tampa, carries the family name of the Rev. Isaac W. Bearss, who started the area's United Brethren Church in 1895; it's known today as Lake Magdalene United Methodist. Most houses came much later. Almost 16,000 people lived here by 1990, and by 2000 the count had nearly doubled. Census estimates date roughly three in five homes to the 1970s and 1980s, with a smaller group from the 1950s and '60s. On houses that age, we rekey the locks that still work well, replace worn deadbolts with sturdier ones, and fix strikes that have shifted so the bolt goes home without a push.
Lake Magdalene skews older than the county as a whole: its median age at the 2020 census was 44.5, against 37.6 countywide, and more than one resident in five was 65 or over. That changes what a good door looks like. A lever handle is easier than a round knob for stiff or sore hands, a deadbolt with a thumbturn that moves easily beats one that takes a wrist-twist, and a keypad lets a caregiver, a visiting nurse or an adult son or daughter come in with a code instead of a copied key. We fit all three, and a keypad code can be cancelled the day it's no longer needed.
About one home in six here is in a building with five or more units, and a little more than a quarter of households rent, according to Census estimates. So we also rekey apartment and condo doors between tenants and open them for residents who can show a lease or an ID with the address. The shopping strips on North Dale Mabry and North Florida Avenue, plus the stores along Fletcher and Bearss, add business doors to the list: rekeys when staff leave, glass storefront locks that won't catch, door closers, and keypad entry for back doors. And for cars, we cut and program spare keys and fobs for most makes, or make a new key at the car when none are left.
Bearss, Fletcher and the lakes in between
Bearss Avenue and Fletcher Avenue cross Lake Magdalene from east to west, North Florida Avenue and North Boulevard run north and south through it, and Dale Mabry and I-275 frame its sides. The Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library is at 2902 W Bearss Ave. Hamner Tower Park, on North Boulevard, is home to the Hamner Fire Tower, a Hillsborough County Historic Landmark since 1995. Lake Magdalene Elementary and Buchanan Middle School are both inside the community, too.
The gated Avila golf community also falls inside Lake Magdalene's boundaries. Its estates have their own page: Avila locksmith.
For keypads and smart deadbolts, our keyless entry page shows the models we install and how codes are added and removed. For business doors, see storefront door locks for glass entries and door closer repair for doors that slam or don't latch.
For cars, spare car keys explains making a second key while the first still works, and transponder key programming covers chip keys without buttons.
West across Dale Mabry is Northdale, Carrollwood sits to the southwest, and Lutz is to the north.
What we fix most in Lake Magdalene
Every neighborhood has its own lock profile. Here's what keeps our techs busiest in Lake Magdalene.
Smooth-working locks get new pins; tired deadbolts give way to sturdier ones, with the strike reset so the bolt goes home.
Lever handles in place of round knobs and deadbolts with easy thumbturns, for hands that don't grip like they used to.
A separate code for a caregiver, a nurse or family, cancelled when it's no longer needed, with a key cylinder as backup.
Unit doors rekeyed between tenants, and lockouts opened for residents who can show a lease or an ID.
Rekeys when staff change, glass storefront locks, door closers and keypad entry for back doors.
Spare chip keys, remotes and push-button fobs for most makes, or a new key made at the car if none are left.

Which parts of Lake Magdalene do you serve?+
All of it, across its three ZIP codes, 33618, 33613 and 33612: from Dale Mabry Highway over to I-275, and from the Tampa city line up to Lutz. One call to (813) 832-4777 gets you a free quote.
Can you make our doors easier for an older parent to open?+
Yes. We can swap round knobs for lever handles, fit deadbolts with thumbturns that move easily, and add a keypad so no key is needed at all. We'll go through the doors with you and suggest what fits each one.
How do I let a caregiver in without handing out a key?+
Put a keypad deadbolt on one door and give the caregiver a code of their own. When the arrangement ends, delete that code; nobody else's changes. Some models also keep a log, so you can see when each code was used.
I'm locked out of my apartment. Can you help?+
Yes, during our hours. We open apartment and condo doors once you show a lease or an ID with the address, using methods that don't damage the door. If the key is lost rather than locked inside, ask your landlord or manager about rekeying the unit.
Do you work on business doors along Dale Mabry and Florida Avenue?+
Yes. When someone leaves, we rekey the doors their key could open; we also repair glass storefront locks that won't catch, adjust or replace door closers, and install keypad entry on the doors staff use. For several doors at once, we walk the property with you before quoting.
What hours do you keep?+
Monday through Saturday, 8am until 8pm. Sunday we're closed, and no one is sent out overnight; call after 8pm or on a Sunday and the job is booked for the next day we're open.
How much does a locksmith cost in Lake Magdalene?+
There's no flat number. The price follows the work: how many locks, rekey or replace, which hardware, and for a car, the key it needs. You'll get a free quote before we begin.
