Storefronts, Lofts & Car Keys

Exit devices that won't latch, storefront deadlatches and hookbolts that quit, closers that slam, and keys that walked out with former staff. Then the lofts and condos, and the cars parked in the garages. We work on Ybor's doors six days a week, until 8pm.

The locksmith Ybor City trusts

Ybor City was founded in the 1880s by Vicente Martinez Ybor and other cigar makers, and Tampa annexed it in 1887. Today it's a National Historic Landmark District, and Historic Ybor covers the blocks from I-4 down to Adamo Drive and from Nebraska Avenue across to 22nd Street. 7th Avenue is the main commercial street; in 2008 the American Planning Association named it one of its Great Streets. Most of the neighborhood shares one ZIP code, 33605. Family-run since 2009, The Locksmith Shop works from a counter at 4556 S Manhattan Ave, down in South Tampa. For a no-charge quote, call (813) 832-4777; you'll have the price before we start.

Most of what we do in Ybor starts at a business door. The bars, restaurants and shops on and around 7th Avenue put their doors through constant use, and the failures tend to repeat. An exit device stops latching, or its dogging slips, and staff start propping the door. A narrow-stile storefront door drops on its hinges until the deadlatch only catches when someone pulls it tight, or the hookbolt refuses to throw when the key turns. We look at the door before the hardware, meaning the hinges, the strike and the closer, because a brand-new device hung in a sagging door just fails again. Then we repair, adjust or replace what's worn, and every exit we work on still lets people out with a single push from inside.

Closers cause more trouble than they get credit for. One that slams beats up the latch and the frame; one that drifts or stops short leaves the door resting against the strike, closed but not latched, and on a business that means unlocked. We adjust the closers that still have life in them and replace the ones leaking oil or undersized for the door. Keys are the other constant. People leave, and each departure can take a key along. Rather than rekeying each time someone leaves, many owners move to a master key system on Mul-T-Lock restricted keys, where only an authorized dealer can cut new copies and a keying chart records who holds what. For back-of-house doors where a code works better than a key, a keypad or fob reader lets you shut off one person without touching anyone else's access.

Ybor has residents again, too. New apartments and condos have gone up on lots that sat empty for decades, and older buildings have been converted into homes. In a condo or loft building, the entry doors, garage gates and fobs are run by the association or the manager, so any change to the building's system starts with them. The door to your own unit is where we come in: a rekey at move-in, a keypad or smart deadbolt where the association permits one, and a lockout when your key is sitting inside. Live in an older house or one of the district's casitas? We rekey those locks, fit solid deadbolts and get stubborn doors latching again.

Then there are the cars. The City built parking garages to serve the district, and a garage is where a fob dies, a key gets locked in with the bags, or a key slips out of a pocket somewhere between the car and 7th Avenue. We get cars open without damaging them, and if the keys are all gone, we make a new one beside the car, cutting the blade and programming the chip, for most makes.

From 7th Avenue to 22nd Street

Historic Ybor is about a square mile laid out on its original street grid, and the City lists several neighborhood associations in and around it: Historic Ybor, Historic East Ybor and Gary, North Ybor, VM Ybor and Ybor Heights. The TECO Line streetcar ties the district to the Channel District and downtown, Ybor City Museum State Park on 9th Avenue shows the casitas built for cigar workers, and IKEA, on North 22nd Street, opened at the district's southern edge in 2009.

For the hardware itself, panic bar and exit device repair covers devices that stick, rattle, won't latch or won't stay dogged; storefront door locks covers the deadlatches, hookbolts, paddles and cylinders in aluminum-and-glass doors; and door closer repair covers closers that slam, drift or leak. For keys and codes, see master key systems and commercial access control.

The historic district has its own design guidelines, and exterior changes there go before the City's Barrio Latino Commission. Our part is the hardware on the door. If a project grows into a new door or a new storefront frame, talk to the City before anything gets ordered.

If the only car key is lost, our page on lost car key replacement explains how we build a new key at the vehicle. Southwest of Ybor, Downtown Tampa has a page of its own, and so does Seminole Heights to the north, while our Harbour Island locksmith page covers the island off downtown.

Booking business door work in Ybor

Door work fits our hours most easily before you open or during a slower afternoon, and it has to wrap up by 8pm. When you call, tell us which door it is, the front entry, the back exit or a side door, what it's doing wrong, and what kind of hardware is on it. A photo of the whole device and one of the door's edge answer most of our questions before we arrive. For several doors, or a move to a master key system, we look the doors over in person and put the quote in writing before work starts.

What we fix most in Ybor City

Every neighborhood has its own lock profile. Here's what keeps our techs busiest in Ybor City.

Exit Devices That Won't Latch

Panic bars that stick, rattle or slip out of dogging, repaired or replaced so the exit still opens with one push.

Storefront Deadlatches & Hookbolts

Aluminum-and-glass entries that only catch when pulled tight, or won't lock at all, fixed at the door and the hardware.

Closers That Slam or Drift

Closers adjusted or replaced so the door shuts without banging and latches on every close.

Restricted Master Keys

Rekeys when staff leave, then Mul-T-Lock restricted keys on a master system so extra copies need your sign-off.

Loft, Condo & Casita Doors

Move-in rekeys, keypad deadbolts if the association approves, and solid locks for older houses.

Car Trouble in the Garages

Keys locked inside, dead fobs and lost keys: we get the car open undamaged or make a replacement key right there.

Ybor City locksmith FAQ

Are you open late in Ybor?+

No. Ybor keeps going long after we close for the night. Our day runs 8am to 8pm, Monday through Saturday, with Sundays off, so we can't help with a door that fails at midnight; call when we open and we'll put it on the schedule. Most business door trouble gives some warning, like a latch that only catches some of the time or a closer that has started to slam, and that's the time to call, while we're open.

Our exit device won't latch. Can it be fixed, or does it need replacing?+

Plenty of devices can stay in service. We start with the door, the hinges, the strike and the closer, then move on to the device's latch and dogging. Many come back with an adjustment or a new part. A device that's cracked, bent or worn out gets replaced, and we walk you through the reason before we do it.

Staff turn over all the time. How do we stop rekeying after every departure?+

Two ways. A master key system on Mul-T-Lock restricted keys means no kiosk or hardware counter can copy your keys, so the count stays accurate, and when someone leaves, only the doors their key opened need attention. For back-of-house doors, a keypad or fob reader lets you delete one person's code or fob and leave everyone else alone.

Can you rekey the door to my loft or condo?+

Yes, your unit's door. The building's entry doors, garage gates and fobs are controlled by the association or the property manager, so start with them for anything on that system. For the unit door, we rekey it at move-in, fit a keypad or smart deadbolt if the association's rules allow one, and check that you actually live there before opening it in a lockout.

Can you open my car in a parking garage?+

Yes, Monday through Saturday until 8pm. Give us the garage and level, what you drive, and whether you can see the key through the window or it's gone. Entry is damage-free, and when no key remains, we make one on site after you prove the car is yours.

How do you price work in Ybor?+

Each job gets its own free quote before anything starts. A business door depends on the hardware and whether it needs an adjustment, a part or a new device; a unit door depends on rekeying versus new locks; and a car depends on what type of key it uses.
