Seminole Heights Locksmith
Bungalow Locks, Rekeys & Car Keys
Early-1900s Craftsman bungalows, wood doors that bind once the summer humidity sets in, and a neighborhood full of restaurants, brew pubs and independent shops. We add deadbolts that suit the house, key the whole place alike, and cut and program car keys for most makes.
The locksmith Seminole Heights trusts
Seminole Heights got its start in 1911, when T. Roy Young began developing 40 acres about three miles north of downtown, back when the streetcar let people live out here and work in the city. It's still known for its early-1900s Craftsman bungalows, and the greater neighborhood now stretches from the Hillsborough River, which wraps its west and north sides, over to 22nd Street on the east and down to Hillsborough Avenue on the south. Most of it sits in ZIP codes 33603 and 33604. We're The Locksmith Shop, family-run since 2009, and our storefront at 4556 S Manhattan Ave in South Tampa takes walk-ins. Phone (813) 832-4777 to get a no-cost quote up front.
Plenty of front doors around here are solid wood and have outlasted several owners' worth of hardware. When we add a deadbolt or upgrade a weak one, the aim is a lock that holds and still looks like it belongs to the house. We choose a finish that sits comfortably beside the knob and hinges already on the door, bore clean holes so the wood around the bolt stays strong, and anchor the strike plate with long screws that bite into the framing behind the jamb, so a kick lands on the house itself instead of a thin strip of trim.
Summer is rough on these houses. Humidity swells wood doors and older frames shift, so a deadbolt that turned easily in January needs a lift or a shove by July. Usually the lock is fine; the bolt has just stopped meeting its hole. We realign or move the strike, ease whatever is rubbing, and make sure the latch catches before we bring up new hardware. The other thing we hear about constantly is the key ring: one key for the front, another for the side door, a third for the French doors, and a mystery key that might open the back. Locks that share a keyway get rekeyed to a single key, the odd ones out get swapped for matching hardware, and a detached garage or an alley gate can usually join the same key if its lock allows.
If you rent out a duplex unit or a garage apartment, every move-out is a chance for a key to wander off. We rekey between tenants, and owners with more than one unit can have them keyed so the owner's key works in every unit while each tenant's key opens only that tenant's door. The neighborhood's restaurants, brew pubs and shops bring a different set of doors: glass entries, back exits with panic bars, and closers that slam or never quite pull the door shut. And for the car, we cut spare keys and program remotes and smart fobs for most makes, or build a new key beside the car when the last one has gone missing.
Seminole Heights, from Central Avenue to the river
The City of Tampa lists Old Seminole Heights, South Seminole Heights, Southeast Seminole Heights, Hampton Terrace and Seminole Heights East as neighborhood associations, and we work in every one of them. Central Avenue runs through the middle of it all, with Hillsborough High School at 5000 N Central Ave and the Seminole Heights Branch Library at 4711 Central Ave, on the corner of Osborne. Out on the river side, Rivercrest and Epps parks belong to the longest run of riverfront parkland in the city.
The neighborhood holds two historic districts: Seminole Heights itself, which carries both a local and a national designation, and Hampton Terrace, which has a national one. The City's Architectural Review Commission oversees the local district, and exterior repairs inside it can need a Certificate of Appropriateness. Our work is the lock and the hardware that goes with it. If a project means replacing the door itself, check with the City first.
For neighborhood businesses, each kind of door gets its own page on our site. Glass entries that won't lock, or only catch when someone pulls them tight, are covered under storefront door locks. Back exits with a bar that sticks, rattles or won't latch are covered under panic bar repair, and doors that slam or drift open under door closer repair. Once staff keys start multiplying, master key systems gives the owner one key to everything and each employee just the doors that job needs.
At home, a keypad deadbolt on your everyday door lets the dog walker, the house sitter and the contractor each get a code you can delete later, and our keyless entry page walks through the models. For the car, a spare car key made while the first one still works is the one key worth having before you need it.
Just south, Tampa Heights is covered on our Downtown Tampa locksmith page, and southeast toward the old cigar factories, Ybor City is covered separately.
What we fix most in Seminole Heights
Every neighborhood has its own lock profile. Here's what keeps our techs busiest in Seminole Heights.
A new or upgraded deadbolt in a finish that suits the door, with the strike screwed into the framing behind the jamb.
Bolts and latches that stopped lining up when the wood swelled, realigned so the door locks without a lift or a shove.
Front, side, French and back doors rekeyed or matched to one key, with the detached garage and alley gate added where the lock allows.
Locks rekeyed between tenants, plus an owner's key that opens every unit while each tenant's key opens just one.
Glass entry locks, panic bars that won't latch, and closers that slam, for the neighborhood's restaurants, brew pubs and shops.
Second keys, remote keys and smart fobs for most makes, plus a fresh key built beside the car if none are left.

Which parts of Seminole Heights do you serve?+
All of it. We work in Old Seminole Heights, South and Southeast Seminole Heights, Hampton Terrace and Seminole Heights East, from the parks along the river out past 22nd Street. Ring (813) 832-4777 and we'll price the job for free.
Can you put a deadbolt on an old wood front door?+
In most cases, yes. We check how thick the door is, how sound the wood is along its edge, and how much room the trim leaves, then fit a deadbolt in a finish that suits the door. If the edge is too split or soft to hold a new lock well, you'll hear that from us before anything gets drilled.
My deadbolt only locks if I lift or push the door. Is the lock broken?+
Probably not. Wood doors swell and frames move in the humid months, so the bolt no longer lines up with the strike. We adjust or relocate the strike and free up the binding first. New hardware only comes up if the lock itself turns out to be worn.
I rent out a garage apartment. What should I do when a tenant moves out?+
Rekey the unit's locks before the next tenant moves in; after that, keys from the last lease won't turn them. If you own more than one unit, we can set them up so your key opens every unit and each tenant's key opens only their own. Rather change a code than change pins? Put a keypad deadbolt on the unit door.
Can you let me back into my house if I'm locked out?+
Yes, during business hours. Before opening anything we check that you live at the address, so have an ID or a lease handy, and we start with entry methods that leave the lock and the door undamaged.
When are you open?+
We're open Monday to Saturday from 8 in the morning until 8 at night, and closed all day Sunday. Anything that breaks once we've closed gets booked first thing when we reopen.
How much does a locksmith cost in Seminole Heights?+
There's no single number, because the job decides it: how many doors, whether a lock is rekeyed or replaced, the deadbolt or keypad you choose, and for a car, the kind of key it takes. Quotes are free, and yours comes before we touch a lock.
