The locksmith West Tampa trusts
West Tampa is one of the oldest neighborhoods inside Tampa's city limits. Hugh Macfarlane, a Scottish-born attorney, founded it in 1892 on 200 acres west of the Hillsborough River, hoping to lure cigar factories and their workers over from Ybor City, and it governed itself as a separate city from 1895 until Tampa annexed it in 1925. Its historic edges are the river and Rome Avenue on the east, Dale Mabry Highway on the west, Kennedy Boulevard on the south and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on the north, and most residents live in ZIP code 33607, nearly all the rest in 33606. The Locksmith Shop has been family-run since 2009. Our walk-in shop is south of here at 4556 S Manhattan Ave, and for West Tampa jobs we also come to you. Call (813) 832-4777 for a free quote.
Growth was slow at first. The first cigar factory had to close for a while because workers wouldn't ride a ferry across the river, until Macfarlane built a bridge and connected West Tampa to the city's streetcar line by 1894. Then it took off: by 1900 it had more people than Tallahassee and was the second-largest city in Hillsborough County, and together with Ybor City it turned out more hand-rolled cigars than anywhere in the world, which is how Tampa came to be called Cigar City. A lot of that era still stands. The West Tampa Historic District, on the National Register since 1983, covers about 273 acres and 908 historic buildings. On houses that old, we rekey the locks that still work, add a deadbolt where a door never had one, and get doors that have shifted over the decades to latch again.
West Tampa is changing again. Since the 2000s it has gained new apartments and an overhauled riverfront park, and blocks of older public housing have been cleared for new townhomes. A new home's keys and codes usually pass through builders, trades and agents before they reach you, so we rekey at move-in and reset any keypad or smart lock so only your codes work. Apartment residents who lock themselves out get back in as soon as they can prove they live there.
Columbus Drive, Armenia Avenue, Howard Avenue, Main Street and Tampa Bay Boulevard are home to many of the neighborhood's Cuban, Colombian and Puerto Rican eateries and small markets, and most of the big brick cigar factories are still here, some converted into offices. Those buildings mean storefront doors, back doors and office suites. We rekey after staff turnover, fix glass storefront locks and door closers, lay out master keys for buildings with several tenants, and fit keypad or fob entry on suite doors. Cars are covered too: spare keys and fobs for most makes, and if the last key is lost, we make a fresh one on site, cut and programmed to that car.
Main Street, MacFarlane Park and the river
The West Tampa Free Public Library opened at Main Street and Howard Avenue in 1914 as Hillsborough County's first public library, paid for with a Carnegie grant and built on land given by cigar factory owner Angel Cuesta. It's still open as the West Tampa Branch Library, at 2312 W Union St. Farther west, MacFarlane Park is where Ybor City's social clubs once held picnics and baseball games, and the Macfarlane Park neighborhood around it runs roughly from Himes Avenue to MacDill Avenue, between Beach Street on the north and Cypress and Main Streets on the south.
The West Tampa Historic District itself is bounded by Cypress and Ivy Streets and by Fremont and Habana Avenues. I-275, built in the 1960s, cuts through the middle of the wider neighborhood, and on the riverbank, the 25-acre Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park sits just north of the University of Tampa, across the water from the Straz Center.
For business doors, storefront door locks covers glass entries that won't lock right, door closer repair covers doors that slam or drift, and master key systems explains how one building can run on an owner's key, tenant keys and shared-door keys. At home, keyless entry shows the keypad and smart deadbolts we install.
For the car, spare car keys covers adding a key while one still works, and lost car key replacement explains how we make a key at the vehicle when every key is gone.
South across Kennedy Boulevard, Hyde Park has its own page; west of Dale Mabry is the Westshore business district; and across the river is Downtown Tampa.

Which parts of West Tampa do you cover?+
The whole neighborhood: Old West Tampa, Macfarlane Park, Northeast Macfarlane, Bowman Heights and Marina Club, from the river out to Dale Mabry and from Kennedy Boulevard up to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, in ZIP codes 33607 and 33606. Call (813) 832-4777 for a free quote.
We bought a new townhome in West Tampa. Do we really need to rekey?+
Yes. Between construction and closing, keys and codes pass through builders, subcontractors and agents. Rekeying makes every one of those keys useless, and if the front door has a keypad or smart lock, we reset it and delete the old codes and app access so only yours work.
I lost my only car key near Columbus Drive. Can you make one where the car is?+
For most makes, yes. We meet you at the car, confirm it's yours, then cut a new key and program it on the spot. Mercedes-Benz from 2015 on is the exception, since the dealer is the only place those keys come from.
Do you work on restaurant, market and office doors?+
Yes. When staff turn over, we rekey the doors they used; we also fix glass storefront locks, tune or swap tired closers, and set up master keys for buildings with several tenants, so the owner has one key to everything and each tenant only their own suite.
¿Hablan español?+
Sí. West Tampa ha sido uno de los barrios más latinos de la ciudad desde que se fundó, y podemos atenderle en español de principio a fin. Llame al (813) 832-4777.
What are your hours?+
We're open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm, and closed on Sunday, with nobody working overnight. Quotes are free, and you'll have yours before any work starts.
